Published 5 months ago • 2 min read

We are now ready to host our 3rd annual food drive chess event for charity. We ask that you consider ways to partner with us by sponsoring and participating in this event at a time when there is a significant need for food in our community. Learn more in this issue of our newsletter. Enjoy and please remember to share this with everyone in your network:

1. Registration Is Open For The 3rd CHRISTMAS CHESS CLASSICS for CHARITY

Our food drive chess event is about two weeks away. On Saturday, December 9th, we will host our 3rd Christmas Chess Classics in support of Charity in partnership with the Oakville Chess Club, Elevate My Chess and Chess For Community. This year, all donations raised from this event will be donated to Harvest Market. Harvest Market is a ministry of Hope Bible Church Oakville and they serve our community by providing food and day-to-day supplies to families in need. There are a number of ways you can support this charity initiative:

  • You can donate cash directly to help offset the costs of running the event. We will volunteer our time and expertise to run a professional chess event. You can donate any amount here.
  • You can participate as a player by registering to play for FREE here. We ask that you consider bringing non-perishable food items for donation to Harvest Market.
  • You can simply come to cheer on participants. Again, feel free to bring non-perishable food items and cash to support the cause.
  • You can share this information with others to help spread the word.

2. Oakville Chess Club Rapid Chess Tournament Starts This Week! Join Us Every Tuesdays. Come Check It Out For FREE!

We are happy to announce that we will begin a 5-round CFC-rated rapid tournament at the Oakville Chess Club starting this week on Tuesday, November 21, 2023. For those of you that may not be aware, the club holds in-person meetings every Tuesday. If you live in Oakville or the surrounding areas, we invite you to join us at the Oakville Chess Club every Tuesday from 6:30 PM. Come play some fun chess and meet new people. Annual club membership is only $280. To learn more about the club and the benefits of membership, click here. Note, you can simply come out to check the club out and if you like it, you can consider joining!

3. Volunteer with Oakville Chess Club

We are currently seeking adult volunteers (at least 18 years of age) to assist during our weekly chess club meetings. Volunteers assist with a number of tasks - setting up tables and chairs for the weekly club meetings; helping with managing members at the club; instructing new players; and assisting with some administrative tasks. This role will be ideal for parents, particularly parents that have their kids enrolled as club members. Commitment can be flexible, either once a week, once a month, once a quarter and anything in between.

If you're interested in volunteering, simply send an email to info@oakvillechessclub.ca and we will follow up with you on the next steps.

4. In-Person Level 2 Lessons Starts This Week on Tuesday, Nov 21!

Registration is still open for a new class of our 8-Week Level 2 Beginner Chess Lessons starting this week on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at the Oakville Chess Club. At the end of each class, participants can join members of the chess club to play more chess and reinforce some of the concepts they are learning in class. Club membership will be required and there will be discounts for those that are already registered in our group lessons. To learn more and to register, go here.

5. Carlsen Survives Thriller At The European Team Chess Championship

World number-one Magnus Carlsen escaped with just two minor pieces against Danish GM Jonas Bjerre's queen to help struggling Norway to a second win in a row. You can review the analysis of the game in this video shared by Agadmator in his YouTube Channel. Enjoy!
