It’s the last day of August, which means we’re about to start a brand new school year and the beginning of many other routine activities. It also means we’re getting ready to resume our chess events and to reopen the Oakville Chess Club for the 2023/2024 season. Learn more in this issue of our newsletter. I hope you all enjoy what’s left of the Summer as well as the long weekend ahead. Enjoy and please remember to share this with everyone in your network:

2. Registration Is Now Open For The October 7 EMC Rapid Chess Tournament

Our next event is coming up in October and this time, we are hosting an Over-The-Board Rapid Chess Tournament. This one-day event will take place in Mississauga and will be CFC Active-Rated. You can register today for only $40. Registration fees go up to $45 shortly and later to $50 for late registrants. This event if FREE for all EMC Private Club Members. To learn more and to register, click here.

3. Volunteer with Oakville Chess Club

We are currently seeking adult volunteers (at least 18 years of age) to assist during our weekly chess club meetings. Volunteers assist with a number of tasks - setting up tables and chairs for the weekly club meetings; helping with managing members at the club; instructing new players; and assisting with some administrative tasks. This role will be ideal for parents, particularly parents that have their kids enrolled as club members. Commitment can be flexible, either once a week, once a month, once a quarter and anything in between.

If you're interested in volunteering, simply send an email to info@oakvillechessclub.ca and we will follow up with you on the next steps.

4. Champions Chess Tour 2023 (CCT) Resumes

The Champions Chess Tour 2023 (CCT) is a massive chess circuit that includes six events that take place throughout the year and end with live in-person Finals. Featuring the world's top players and a prize fund of $2,000,000, the CCT is Chess.com's biggest event thus far. The knockout stage of the fifth leg of the tour, the Julius Baer Generation Cup is currently underway. To learn more and watch live, click here.

5. The Top 10 Benefits of Learning and Playing Chess

One of my favorite things I do each week is to catch up on chess events around the world by mostly watching chess content creators on social media. And when I have a moment, I enjoy playing online chess as well. In many ways, I’ve been blessed by the game of chess. The game of chess is one of the oldest board games and it is loved all over the world. You will often find people gathered in living rooms, pubs, plazas, parks, and libraries to match wits over the cherished chessboard. And you may wonder…

“Why is it that people are willing to devote such time to the game?”

Well, there are a number of reasons, but a big one is undoubtedly the fact that chess involves an intense intellectual challenge that’s very good for the health of your mind and particularly good for the development of young kids. In this article, I share my top ten benefits of learning and playing the game of chess. Enjoy.
